Sciatica or is it a Pain in the bum?
Oooo my sciatica, a right pain in the bum!
Sciatica is a common form of lower back pain, but…. It’s not an actual “thing”. The term sciatica is often misunderstood or poorly explained to patients.
Sciatica is actually a set of symptoms rather than an actual diagnosis for what is irritating the root of the nerve and causing the pain your feeling. This is important to remember because these sets of symptoms vary from patient to patient depending on the true underlying cause and the levels of pain that you may be experiencing.
When a patient is given the diagnosis of sciatica, it can lead to them becoming overly focused on the how to treat “it”. In reality the majority of sciatica cases presented at the Clinic are no more than referred pain from a trigger point in your gluteal muscles. (That’s not to say it doesn't hurt of course!)
So if you think you have sciatica, ask yourself the following questions:
- Does the pain go below your knee? If yes, this is likely to be an irritation of the nerves roots that join to become your sciatic nerve.
- If you answer was no, (and in most cases it will be) your most likely suffering from a referred trigger point in your gluteals. In other words, a right pain in the bum!
So our advice to you would be, get it checked out by your Chiropractor first and get to the bottom (pun intended) of the cause of you pain. Your Grimsby Chiropractor can help no matter what the cause. Call our chiropractic office at 01472 488082 to schedule an appointment and to see if you are a candidate for non surgical spinal treatment.
