Rehabilitation
People are generally aware that exercise will improve muscle strength and this is naturally true. Most people are not aware that if rehabilitation is carried out for a sufficient period of time, other tissue types such as ligaments, cartilage, tendons and even the discs of the spine will be strengthened. Simply put, all tissues that are involved in proper spinal function become strengthened. There is widespread agreement among health professionals that daily activities both at home and at work can be taxing for the spine and that we cannot avoid stressing the spine during these activities. Modern treatment strategies are designed to prepare patients for these unavoidable activities so that the spine remains well protected.
Low Back Pain
Research has shown that patients suffering from chronic or recurrent low back pain should participate in a rehabilitation programme in addition to traditional chiropractic care. It has been clearly demonstrated that patients have weakened back muscles compared to non-patient populations. Returning to normal daily activities does not re-establish normal muscle strength or endurance values and rehabilitation is therefore necessary to normalise spinal function. The very latest scientific studies have demonstrated that patients suffering from chronic low back pain suffer from decreased muscular co-ordination thus further weakening the spine.
Neck Pain
Recent developments in the scientific field have shown that patients suffering from long term or recurrent neck pain may require a period of rehabilitation after traditional chiropractic care as initial symptoms subside. It has been clearly demonstrated that neck pain patients have weakened muscles compared to age matched healthy individuals. In order to re-establish normal neck function it is necessary to strengthen the muscles that are involved in neck movement as well as the protection of the neck. If these important muscles are not strengthened there is a greater risk of re-injuring the neck.
