A headache is not an aspirin deficiency

If you have a headache, you’re not alone. More than 10 million people in the UK get headaches, making them one of the most common health complaints, but most are easily treated. Headaches are so very common and because they happen regularly, often people refer to them as "just a normal headache". However headaches usually happen for a reason.

Headaches are rarely a sign of immediately serious or life threatening health problems. Some headaches are so painful, however, that it may seem that something is very wrong inside the head.

As a Chiropractor ‘I am like a pig in mud’ when someone tells me they have got a headache. Actually treatment for headaches is one the most common reasons to see a Chiropractor.

Why see a Chiropractor for relief of headaches?

The main reason to see a Chiropractor for relief of headaches is to treat the cause of the headache and not just a symptom. It will help to understand what causes most headaches. The most common type of headache is a cervicogenic headache. Cervicogenic headaches are caused by a problem in the neck (cervical spine). Your spine protects your nervous system, which starts with the brain and becomes the spinal cord. The nerves act like wires carrying signals from your brain to every part of your body. If all the bones in the neck aren’t moving correctly this can affect some of the nerve endings – because of the unique way the nerves in the neck work they can affect the nerves into the head, almost like a short circuit, which causes headaches.
Chiropractors are experts in the mechanics of the spine and correcting problems that stop the spine working at its best.

Medication and painkiller headaches

Some headaches are a side effect of taking a particular medication and taking too many painkillers can also cause frequent headaches. Painkillers are a good way to relieve headaches, but if you take them more than two or three times a week, they could become the cause of your headaches. Up to one in 10 people who have frequent headaches do so because they take painkillers too often, says Gavin Young, Chiropractor.

What can I do to help prevent headaches?

  • Maintain good posture to help reduce misalignments in the bones of the neck.
  • Seek to avoid situations of pressure and tension that can bring on a headache. If you can't avoid pressure, try to learn to cope with it more effectively.
  • Find time to take periods of rest to relax, close your eyes, breathe some fresh air and even take a brisk walk.
  • Avoid getting overtired to the point of exhaustion.
  • Exercise regularly to stimulate the circulation of blood to the head and to maintain neuromusculoskeletal flexibility.
  • Avoid too little or too much sleep, which can be contributing factors to headaches.
  • Don't sleep on your stomach. Either sleep on your side with your head supported so that it is level with your spine, or on your back with a small pillow or rolled up towel supporting your neck rather than your head. A cervical pillow is best.
  • Don't overindulge in food or drink, and don't smoke.

If you are suffering with headaches or you know someone who is then we can help. We want to aid anyone looking for relief from headaches in Grimsby. Paracetamol and aspirin just mask the symptoms they don’t solve the problem.
