Goose's First Adjustment

Goose and his first adjustment

Some of you may have seen Goose sniffing around the clinic or heard me talking about how he steals all of the bed. Goose is my dog and Goose had his first adjustment today. I'm trained and had years of experience in dealing with humans, but not capable of dealing with dogs. So I had to take him to see the wonderful Christine East. Christine has years of experience in dealing with animals, from show winning dogs to horses and even ducks!! The approach to care of an animal is similar to a human, firstly a detailed case history is taken. The medical history allows the Chiropractor an insight into what the body has been through before arriving in the office and what is going on now. For some the medical history may be short - for others it can include lists of operation and sheets of medication.

Armed with a thorough medical history the Chiropractor can go about a thorough examination. For Goose this meant having all his joints checked systematically - now Goose is very placid, but I had worried that being prodded and poked about by a stranger may cause him some upset. This wasn't the case, my best friend curled up at Christine's knee and let her get on with checking him over - my biggest worry now was whether he was going to start snoring!

Goose being adjustedOnce Christine had checked Goose over she went about making a few corrections. Goose is a healthy dog (some would say pampered), fortunately he has never had any trauma and is content. Yet even though he appears symptom free, the Chiropractic approach is about prevention. Christine's examination revealed that his left back leg wasn't moving quite as smoothly as it should (he was subluxated) and as a result this could affect the way he walks. A good way to imagine this is a car tyre that isn't tracked correctly, it would put more pressure on one side - initially this wouldn't show any symptoms but left for a period of time could cause the joints to wear quicker on one side resulting in arthritis. This is the same in humans, often we will see patients who have done a job that puts stress on one side of their body more than the other, they end up with osteoarthritis on that side.

Goose will be going back to the Chiropractor in December for a check-up, he doesn't need to go very often because he is in good health. It is much easier to keep someone healthy rather than wait for someone to get sick and then try and fix it.

Overall health is important at Chiropractic First, that is why we recommend that your health team should consist of a Chiropractor, Dentist, optometrist, exercise coach and a nutritionist. They aim to keep your body as healthy as possible. Your GP (or Vet) is also an essential part of the team and their care should be used in a crisis. Our aim is to help keep yourself healthy without the need for drugs and surgery.
